This is a vintage brass and (possibly) clay handled magnifying glass and letter opener set made with a duck’s head for the handle. When we first saw the set we thought the handles were possibly tusk, ivory, or bone but our best guess is that the handles are made of some type of clay or porcelain. They are very hard and appear to be scrimshaw like but we do not think it is scrimshaw, but we could be wrong. The duck heads appear to be either Widgeon or Green Wing Teal and the drawings are carved into the surfaces.. The brass on each item has a rich patina and we did not choose to polish it. The lens of the magnifying is quite clear and functional. The letter opener is 11 inches long, the magnifying glass is about 8.5 inches long and each weighs about 7 ounces. The magnifying glass is without flaw. The letter opener has had a repair made on the beak by a previous owner. It appears to have been broken off and glued about 3/4 of an inch from the tip and the repair is visible when closely examined. We cannot find any marks that would indicate the set’s maker, date of creation, or where it came from. We thought this a wonderful item for someone who enjoys waterfowl, either to display or to actually use. We have never seen any set similar and have not been able to find anything on an internet search that is at all like it. Please look it over and see what you think. If you want a one of a kind gift for a special outdoors man this would be a good choice.
